The Lamp Light- a sparkling collaboration!
By Janet Wootton, IoD Press Officer and Environmental Artist
An IoD Northamptonshire industry visit to Longthorne Gunmakers Ltd of Northampton led to an unexpected creative collaboration between the company, Nottingham Trent University and Environmental Artist(and IoD Press Officer) , Janet Wootton The result is the Lamp Light, a table lamp made from an offcut of valuable and historic Turkish burr walnut, which went on exhibition for Nottingham Night Light and a week at NTU’s Feast of Lights exhibition which celebrated the work of students, staff and alumni The lamp was created by Janet and designed and machined on the CNC router at NTU with the skilled assistance of Senior Technicians Carl Smith and Jordan Fewell.
It features an unusual integral switch which was made from the brass end of a spent cartridge case, also provided by Longthorne. This is the fourth in a series of one-off table lamps Janet has created as part of her art practice, which focuses on sustainability and upcycling. Janet is an NTU MA Fine Art graduate and now volunteers as an Alumni Fellow, Arts and Humanities at NTU.
Longthorne are delighted the lamp has evolved from the walnut offcut used in the manufacture of sporting shotguns and intend on offering it for sale to any would be buyers, any profit being donated to charity.
It is hoped further educational links may develop between Longthorne and NTU.
